PUBLIC HEALTH IN RELATION TO HUMAN AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Relation of public health to human and national development can be observed through the organized efforts and informed choice of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals.
It is concerned with threats to health based on population health analysis.
Public heath incorporates the inter displinary approaches of epidemiology, biostatistics and heath economics and health services, environmental health, community health, behavioral health, health economics, public policy, insurance medicine and occupational safety and health.
The focus of public health intervention is to improve health and quality of life through the prevention and treatment of diseases and other physical and mental conditions, through surveillance of cases and health indicators and through promotion of health behaviors.
Promotion of hand washing and breastfeeding, delivery of vaccination and distribution of contraceptives i.e. condoms to control the spread of sexually transmitted diseases are examples of common public measures.
Public health also encompasses essential activities/services such as;
• Identification of threats to health and assessment of health service’s needs,
• Timely collection, analysis and publication of information on access, utilization ,costs and outcomes of personal health services,
• Attention to the vital statistics of specific groups that are at higher risk than the total population,
• Collaboration to manage intergraded information systems with private providers and health benefit plans.
Diagnose and investigate health problems and health hazards in the community through;
• Epidemiologic identification of emergency health threats,
• Public health laboratories capability using modern technology to conduct rapid screening and high volume testing,
• Active infectious diseases epidemiology programs,
• Technical capacity for epidemiologic investigation of disease outbreak and patterns of chronic diseases and injuries.
Inform, educate and empower people about health issues you probably come across and even participated in health promotion and social marketing efforts in your community. This can be done through offering the following activities;
• Social marketing and targeted media public communications,
• Providing accessible health information resources at community level e.g. free mobile health screening initiative.
• Active collaboration with personal health care providers to reign force health promotion massages and programs,
• Joint health education program with schools, churches and worksites e.g. stress reduction seminars, parenting support group for enhancing health and health fairs.
Mobilize community partnerships to identify and solve health problems.These activities represents a comprehensive approach to community health in which professionals and even entire sectors of a community collaborate to plan, implement ,monitor ,evaluate and subsequently modify activities and repeat the process as needed.
Develop policies and plans that, support individuals and community health efforts.
Enforce laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety, while you may not always be conscious of how public health regulations have influenced the community environment, for example restraint, you may have noticed a framed certificate hanging on the wall, `Sanitation

Grade A’ ’this certificate is as a result of local health department inspections to ensure that the restraint is in compliance with food storage handling and preparation. While at the same restraint you may also notice a sign that says, “No smoking”, this may be a direct result of a statewide law that was designed to improve the environmental health condition in the community.

Link people to needed personal health services and assure the provision of health care when otherwise unavailable.

Assure a component public health and personal care workforce.
This encompasses;
• Education and trainings for personnel to meet the need for public and personal health services,
• Efficiency processes for licensure of professionals and certification of facilities with regular verifications and inspection follow-ups,
• Adoption to continuous quality improvement and lifelong leaving with all licensure and certification programs.

Evaluate effectiveness, accessibility and quality of personal and population-based health services, evaluating helps public professionals continually refine or revise program approaches in future years of funding.

Research for new insights and innovative solutions to health problems, state and local health department staff might carry out health services research via many different efforts including;
• Continuous linkage with appropriate institutes of higher learning and research,
• An internal capacity to mount timely epidemiologic e.g. outbreak(investigations) and economic analyses e.g. cost-benefit studies and,
• An internal capacity to conduct needed health service research e.g. Survey design, conducting interviews and facilitating the focus group, conducting chemical trials and accessing and using public records.
