CH2M an engineering company widely known for its ability to tackle challenges. THIS CASE study brings out how the company improved its transportation division consultation project from most challenging year in 2014 to a relatively good year in 2015. Both the company’s revenue and profitability grew where the latter increased by three times, just to be specific, the industry average without increasing headcount. This case study is rich in strategies that can be very effective in range of dimensions for both small and large scale projects such as management, organization, planning, budgeting scheduling, resource allocation, monitoring and control of the project

Management and organization is vital for the success of any project Meredith et al (2016)). the emphasis on good management was reflected in a properly conceived plan, at this particular project, which enabled control of complexities and challenges. the imposition of best strategic imperatives portrayed great leadership skills which is essential for the success of such projects. Motivation and enhancing collaboration among the contributors is another two factors the leader need to incorporate throughout the project to ensure that the project maintain its alignment with the main goal
The project maintained the three important factors for an excelling portfolio management; ch2m had to ensure commitment to provide the right resource, secondly, they had to change their usual way of doing things and specifically eradicate silos and thirdly, maintain effective communication and cooperation
According to kerner, H., & kerner (2017). 61% of firms fails to bridge strategy formulation and execution and only 56% of the initiative is successful. This explains why management is essential in any stage whether in strategy formulation, implementation or even evaluation.one must note that management and organization are closely related such that its almost identical element, therefore one need to be good in organizing to be considered a good manager kernel et al ( 2017), Organizations that execute approved project, set ups, and portfolio management practices achieve original attainments and business objectivity more than those organization that choose to ignore.
Planning means setting resources while having completion of a project in mind realistically Binder, J. (2016). Planning makes the team understand where it is going and its goal and thus able to formulate clear objective for effective strategic management. The company set a properly conceived plan. this had positive results within a span of a year.CH2M on their evaluation of this project pointed out that the more complicated the project the more simplified strategy need to be used.one need to understand that strategy means making choices and without clear and good plan the project will be doomed to fail. This project considered possible downturns before moving into any strategy for example they ignored diversification and some business opportunity just to maintain their path, plan towards the goal. One therefore need to focus on the long term goal.CH2M experience has proven the emphasis on maximizing the results of the business. The company’s project for example, had a larger focus on the at-risk design business this led to some of the problem as and significant losses tis led them to develop a new and more appropriate business strategy. This were reflected in the company’s transportation business and the company had to profile and made decision to focus on core services, this had more positive impact in that they added value to the existing relationship with their clients .CH2M had to exit at- risk design build and go back to the drawing board, planning, to refocus on important stage-incubation and development stage. The company had to focus on the core market segments thereafter which were established on clear guiding principles.
Project budgeting and scheduling of human resource will help in improving efficiency and proper utilization of the available resources with significant reduction of cost. this encourages accountability which is very crucial for successful project.CH2M transportation project had to avoid some of the management practices inorder to cut the costs with an intent to lower waste by 13 times. This made it possible to do away with extra cost of low performance, that is normally hidden, whose impact cannot be ignored. Budgeting is critical in that it’s a requirement to every stakeholder from financier to shareholder or even the client. This explains why any project need to put more emphasis on it as a factor to a project. From their experience in transportation project CH2M saw the importance of focusing on core business setting hence maximizing its results. Their focus was to be centered on profitability which made them feel need for sustainable client base where the client would provide revenue without much strain as it would be for relatively few clients .scheduling on the other hand makes sure that human resource is equitably distributed and efficiently allocated for maximum utilization Meredith et al(2016).CH2M came up with a philosophy on better listening as well as taking care of the human resource who in turn will take care of your clients, this had to be incorporated in such aspects as culture and revenue and in turn profit will be at maximum.
Resource allocation is the assigning and scheduling of resource in an efficient and for maximum utilization. for a clearer picture one can think of resource allocation as assembling unit of all other functions. Making thing streamline toward the goal of the project.it enables the desired synergy work at its best by fueling the functions according to their degree of attention requirement. This is not only what makes it essential. the fact that resources are scarce and are affected by various variable such as time factor make the project manager lie with a task of proper timing and within schedule
Another important aspect is monitoring and controlling which involves keeping an eye on the actual project performance Binder, J. (2016). This takes place all through the project life from initial stage to the final stage it’s so important because it helps management to update the plan as the project requires. Managers are therefore able to enhance performance measures improve or update as the change request in a program called correct and preventive actions(CAPA). through this practice the project manager can also repair defect where necessary.CH2M had also found out that it required a change in their corporate to maintain a momentum in both clients trust and portfolio management.
The synergy and empathy created among the workers, later on transforms and translate to clients trust and in turn this improves revenue and growth and more motivation to overcome any other challenge that may be experienced in future. Thus focusing on the core business proposition is a common partying shot for any successful project, verzuh(2015). This leads to higher growth in the long run and hence simplifying the organization challenges.
